In CAKE Basic, a campaign is the relationship between an Affiliate and an Offer.
The 1st campaign created for an Affiliate and an Offer is considered "original" and unique.

If you were to create a 2nd campaign for the same Affiliate and Offer, the system would give you a warning in the Create a Campaign wizard notifying you that one already exists.

Warning text: A campaign for this affiliate and offer already exists. The campaign created will be non-original

This means that CAKE Basic considers these 2 campaigns identical.

  • The tracking links for these 2 campaigns will be the same
  • Without some exception, CAKE Basic will not know when or why to track certain clicks and conversions under 1 campaign over the other

You can tell your original and non-original campaigns apart by looking at the "Original" column in the campaign view

Exceptions

Exceptions on an original campaign and a non-original campaign are different.

On an original campaign, CAKE Basic assumes all traffic, unless otherwise specific, is allowed so the exceptions tab asks for BLOCKED SubAffilaites (s1's) and Creatives

On a non-original campaign, CAKE Basic is asking for those SubAffiliates or Creative ID's that should track under the non-original instead of the original campaign. SubAffiliates and Creatives do not need to be blocked to be allowed.

With exceptions, this allows for you to dynamically segregate traffic and leverage non-original campaigns to assign different payouts for various criteria without having to have your Affiliate change any tracking links on their end. So if you had a non-original campaign where SubAffiliate "cake" received a lower payout, every time CAKE Basic saw &s1=cake, we would track those stats under the non-original campaign.

What if there are no exceptions?

I want all SubAffiliates to be able to run all creatives on either campaign. No problem!
We have 2 handy settings (found in Set Up > Tracking Settings > Original Campaign Settings)that enable you to create multiple campaigns for the same Affiliate and Offer but are still considered original. We outline how each setting functions below, but enabling this setting applies this behavior system-wide. This cannot be adjusted on a per-Offer basis.

Original campaigns by media type

This is the simpler of the two. This updates the system to factor media type when considering whether a campaign is original or not. This means that 2 campaigns with 2 different media types will both be considered "original" and track separately with NO exceptions.

With this setting enabled:

  • Tracking links are different by including a new parameter &m=MEDIA_TYPE which allows CAKE Basic to know exactly which campaign to track under.
  • The result of this is that every campaign is now permanently tied to that media type and media type is now greyed out and cannot be changed.

  • This also means that since both campaigns are unique, we will not auto-place your Affiliate tracking pixel from the original campaign the way that we do with non-original campaigns. Since we consider the 2 campaigns unrelated, the pixel (if the same) needs to be copied from your first campaign.

Original campaigns by Offer Contract

This one is more use-case specific. This updates the system to factor the Offer Contract selected when considering whether a campaign is original or not. This means that 2 campaigns associated to 2 different Offer Contracts will both be considered "original" and track separately with NO exceptions. Common use cases for this are if you want to send traffic simultaneously to 2 different landing pages that have no distinct targeting rules so they should be able to accept traffic from the same sources.

With this setting enabled:

  • Tracking links are different by including parameter &oc=OFFER_CONTRACT_ID which allows CAKE Basic to know exactly which campaign to track under.
  • The result of this is that every campaign is now permanently tied to that Offer Contract so you will note that Offer Contract is now greyed out and cannot be changed.

  • Since both campaigns are unique, we will not auto-place your Affiliate tracking pixel from the original campaign the way that we do with non-original campaigns. Since we consider the 2 campaigns unrelated, the pixel (if the same) needs to be copied from your first campaign.
