Geo Targeting
In this document, we will cover the following topics/questions on Geo Targeting within CAKE:
- Where to add Geo Targeting
- How to add Geo Targeting
- How to redirect another Offer based on Geo Targeting
- How to redirect to another Offer Contract based on Geo Targeting
Where can I set up Geo Targeting?
What is Geo Targeting?
- Geo Targeting is the ability to only allow traffic from specific countries to go to specific Offers. For example, if your Offer only accepted traffic from the United States, through Geo Targeting you could make sure that the only traffic making it to the landing page of that Offer is traffic that is coming from a United States IP Address.
Where can I set this up?
- Open up an Offer Card
- Click the Traffic Sub Tab - This will default to the Targeting Section
- Select "Geo" in the drop down
- By default, all countries are allowed. To change the Geo Targeting from the default "All Countries Allowed" - click on the "Click to change" hyperlink to override the default settings.
How to add Geo Targeting
How do I add Geo Targeting to my Offers?
- By default, all countries are allowed. To change the Geo Targeting from the default "All Countries Allowed" - click on the "Click to change" hyperlink to override the default settings.
- Once you click on the hyperlink "Click to change" - you will notice that the buttons located under the "Allowed" column are red, meaning that traffic from those countries are NOT allowed.
- To allow traffic from one or more countries, select the check box to the left of the country you want to allow.
- Once you have chosen the country &/or countries that you would like to allow, click on the "Allow Selected" button. The red dot under the "Allowed" column will then change to green, meaning that traffic from that country &/or countries ARE allowed.
Setup 2: All 3 offer contracts of the same offer
- A contract is setup for each allowed country (provided they are to be tracked separately)
-
Geo-targeting is applied on your offer contract
- Even though the idea is that your affiliate will only be trafficking the main contract, you should apply geotargeting on all contracts.
- All 3 countries are allowed and redirected to contracts of itself (when setting this up you'll notice that your redirect list is limited to internal contracts)
-
Redirect functionality from an 'Accepted' country (UK for example)
- Once you allow a country, such as the UK above, the list of Offers in the Redirect Offer drop down will be limited to Offer Contracts for this Offer.
- As traffic is sent to the Offer, CAKE will determine which Offer Contract to redirect the traffic to based upon the allowed country.
- CAKE will auto-create a new Campaign for the Affiliate as the redirect occurs. It's important to note that the new Campaigns will be Non-Original, but will NOT require exceptions.
What if I set up a waterfall effect with the geotargeting like this?
- Default (US) contract: redirects UK + CA traffic to the UK contract\L - UK contract: redirects CA traffic to the CA contract
Will that work? Unfortunately, no. With contracts we assume that when you told us to go from 1 contract to another, that country (or rule) is meant to go to that contract so CA traffic was sent to the default contract, we would track that under the UK contract (even if there is a rule set up saying it should go to the CA contract). We will not look up the geotargeting rules on a secondary contract so you need to be sure that you've set up your targeting correctly so that all conditions are accounted for on the contract that the traffic is going to.
How is GeoTargeting with rules different than GeoTargeting?
There is one main distinction of GeoTargeting with Rules, compared to GeoTargeting on its own.
GeoTargeting: country-level only
\L Rules (Location) Targeting: country and state-level (or region) and from there to city-level (NEW!)
It's important to note that you can only use one OR the other so if you have ANY conditions that you want to target on beyond country-level targeting you must use rules.
