What Is A Split Test?
A split test is a method used in marketing and product development to compare at least two versions of a digital asset like a webpage, email campaign, or creative. The goal is to determine which one performs better with traffic by splitting an equal amount of users to each version. In CAKE, a split test is commonly used to test two variations of a landing page, offer, or offer contract.
How To Setup A Split Test Between Landing Pages
To split test between 2 landing pages on the same offer, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the Traffic tab on the Offer card
- Click Targeting sub tab
- Select Rules from the drop down
- Click the New Rule button
- Name the rule
- Check the Active checkbox to turn the rule on immediately
- Optionally check the Shared checkbox if you intend to apply this rule on other offers
- Skip over the Redirect drop down
- Select the name of the Landing Page where you will be splitting traffic
- From the Add Rule Target drop down, choose Percentage Split
- In the Percentage Split field, type 50 to split 50% of traffic between the default and second landing page.
- Click Save to apply the percentage
- Click Create to apply the percentage split rule
- Click Apply to apply the rule on the offer
Note:
If you want to split test between more than 2 landing pages/offers/offer contracts, you will need to add multiple percentage split rules with cascading percentages. The general rule of thumb is to add 1 over the number of pages you are splitting to know what percentage to apply. For example, if you want to split traffic equally across 4 pages, apply 1/4 or 25% to the first rule, 1/3 or 33% to the second rule, and 1/2 or 50% to the last rule. Remember, the 1/1 or 100% of the remaining traffic will go through to the default landing page/offer/offer contract.

FAQ
How do I know which landing page/offer/offer contract performed better on my split test?
Use the Offer Report > Landing Page or Offer Contract drill down to see performance metrics broken down by each landing page/offer contract. If you are split testing offers, both will have their respective rows/metrics in the Offer report.
When and why should I make a rule shared?
Making a rule shared is a workflow efficiency feature that saves you time by copying from a rule you've already built. For instance, if you know you are going to use split testing rules again, instead of going through all 14 steps shown in the first screenshot, you simply pick the rule you already created as shared from the dropdown (next to step 4) and make any necessary adjustments.
